<description>We've been taught to believe that myths are untrue, yet this indicates how atrophied our cultural mythic imagination is. As a result, myth has been relegated to consumer entertainment or dismissed as irrelevant to us vs. a potent way to more deeply understand ourselves in reciprocal relationships with others and the world.
Ours is a fact-based, linear, logical, and control-based culture that doesn't allow much room to follow the deep longing to know ourselves, and yet the longing persists and will continue to persist until we answer its call. Perhaps this time in our human evolution represents a heightened collective calling - can we answer it?
In this episode, Ian and I talk about where we are as a culture and Ian's hope for awakening men worldwide.
Ian became fascinated by the mythic masculine archetype when he initially learned more about the feminine through his film work.
Ian was estranged from his grandfather growing up, but he went with his uncle to clean out his grandfather's home and came across a stack of books after his death. On top was "Iron John" by Robert Bly, which piqued his curiosity.
When young men are not correctly initiated into adulthood and society, they become men at the mercy of their ego and are suspended as "boy-men" in our culture.
The Dominator Culture is a term coined by Riane Eisler, who wrote The Chalice and The Blade. Eisler positions the dominator model in contrast to the partnership model, a more egalitarian structure of society founded on mutual respect among its inhabitants. In dominator culture, men rule over women, whereas partnership culture values men and women equally.
An awakened archetypical mother is a mighty force in the world.
Women tend to enact violence against themselves and Men against others.
The narratives we often create are that the world is out to get us, that we need to conquer nature or anything threatening.
The medical establishment creates a narrative around "war" - such as terms like "frontline workers" or "losing the battle to cancer," and there is a consequence to thinking about nature in this way.
Our colonized view of the world keeps us from reciprocally engaging with life.
The solutions mind is a colonized mind.
Ian MacKenzie is a new paradigm artist who lives on the Salish Sea with his partner and young son. For over ten years, he's been tracking the global emergence of new cultures. From the desert of Burning Man to the heart of Occupy Wall St, he has sought and amplified the voices of visionaries, artists, and activists working toward planetary system change. He hosts The Mythic Masculine podcast and is the founder of A Gathering of Stories.

<description>Bergen Hyde is someone I was immediately drawn to because of her beautiful heart and her willingness to feel and share her experience with others so deeply.
Listen in as we describe the archetypical journey of Wounded Maiden to the Cherishing Mother in our work with the sacred feminine and hear Bergens’s personal story of starving for the nourishment of the divine feminine and how she came to find her.
What is internalized patriarchy, and how does it impact women?
What is the wounded maiden, and why is she so prevalent in the world today?
What are the traits of Wounded Maiden? What are the Traits of Mother?
What is The Triple Mother Wound, and how can we reveal it and heal it?
What is the Death Mother?
How can the dark feminine energies hurt or help us?
Why does the Patriarchy want to keep women pretty, pleasing, and polite?
What is the archetypal underworld, and why must we go there to discover who we are?
How can women awaken from the trance of patriarchal religion to discover the sacred feminine's nourishment?
How did Bergan begin to conceive of her work with WOMB?
Why it’s so important for women to become embodied and know their own inner wild?
How can women return to flow and keep the flow?
How can women connect more deeply with Mother Earth?
What does it mean to be with the “pain of transformation?”
Bergen Hyde has lived in Provo, Utah for the past 13 years with her husband and three kids. Her favorite things are dancing, salty snacks, spending time in the mountains, preferably in a body of water. Bergen is the oldest of 4 and grew up in Wisconsin.
She is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of WOMB, which she founded with her two sisters Jentri and Sarah. They hold women’s circles, workshops, retreats, and one-on-one mentoring designed to support women in healing internalized patriarchy, integrating the sacred feminine, and reclaiming personal sovereignty.
Bergen has been devoted to the sacred feminine for the last four years and is currently training under Sarah Durham Wilson as a Wounded Maiden to Mature Feminine practitioner. Special Guest: Bergen Hyde.

<description>We’ve been taught to believe that myths are untrue, and yet, this indicates how atrophied our cultural mythic imagination is. As a result, myth has been relegated to consumer entertainment or dismissed as something irrelevant to us vs. as a potent way to more deeply understand ourselves in reciprocal relationships with others and the world.
Ours is a fact-based, linear, logical, and control-based culture that doesn’t allow much room to follow the deep longing to know ourselves, and yet the longing persists and will continue to persist until we answer its call.
On top was "Iron John” by Robert Bly, which piqued his curiosity.
When young men are not properly initiated into adulthood and society, they become men at the mercy of their ego and are suspended as "boy-men” in our culture.
An awakened archetypical mother is a very powerful force in the world.
Women tend to enact violence against themselves and Men against others.
The narratives we often create are that the world is out to get us or that we need to conquer nature or anything that threatens us.
The medical establishment creates a narrative around “war” - such as terms like "front line workers” or “losing the battle to cancer,” and there is a consequence to thinking about nature in this way.
Our colonized view of the world keeps us from reciprocally engaging with life.
The solutions mind is a colonized mind.
Ian MacKenzie is a new paradigm artist who lives on the Salish Sea with his partner and young son. For over ten years, he’s been tracking the global emergence of new culture. From the desert of Burning Man to the heart of Occupy Wall St, he has sought and amplified the voices of visionaries, artists, and activists who have been working toward planetary system change. He is the host of The Mythic Masculine podcast and the founder of A Gathering of Stories.

<description>I met Kathy Karn through Seth Godin's digital writing program and we “virtually” fell in love. I became fascinated with her experience with Elephants and moved by her tender and compassionate heart.
Kathy is a visual storyteller, a photographer and conservationist. After 30 plus years as a trauma therapist, she instinctively sought images that reflected resilience, beauty and wholeness, she's primarily a wildlife photographer, although international travel images and people compose half of her image archives, including the iconic animals of east Africa, particularly elephants who have profoundly impacted her work.
Fueled with spirit she's attracted to the wisdom of indigenous cultures. She loves wandering off the beaten path and her camera allows her to focus on specific gestures, connection, or implied story. When she travels to make pictures, she pushes through her natural shyness seeking more. Differences and barriers melt away and curiosity and wonder reign.
She hopes her images are a reminder that there is goodness and beauty in the world. She believes people and nature are inextricably linked. She's horrified by the degradation of the environment and the threat to our planet. Photography is a way of seeing. Which can teach and inspire people to care. When we care, we're more inclined to protect.
If her stories and images inspire readers to take steps towards making the world a better place.
She believes if we take care of nature, Nature will take care of us. When we save wild places, we save ourselves.
When she’s not traveling, she's at home with her husband in London, Ontario, Canada, or on the shores of the Georgian bay, the sixth great lake. She's grateful for family and friends. They are the wind beneath her wings. Creativity is an essential daily practice and there is much to celebrate in her life.
We all have a unique perspective to offer the world. When we don’t judge our contribution or compare it, we realize it’s relevant and important, and our own life's work can stand on its own.
The divine choreography that led Kathy to the front lines of animal wildlife and led her to effortlessly find elephants who were often challenging for others to locate and experience.
Why photography is her medium for fostering compassion and connection.
Why animals have so much to teach us about our own humanity and the interconnectedness of life.
Kathy shares how she gives herself permission to travel and pursue her passion while her husband supports her in doing this from his home base.
How investing in “funding” your soul work gives you the biggest return on investment.
Hear about “A room of One’s Own” a metaphor for traveling solo into new territories to be with your own wonder up close and personal.
How conservation and climate change is a part of Kathy’s ongoing work.
How she came to meet and love Big Tusker Tim and what elephants have taught her about grief and love and connection.
Kathy shares about the loss of her own mother and how she came into the realization of her own grief.
Why the loss of the Matriarch is such a profound event and rite of passage both for humans and elephants.
Hear about the moment of Revelation that Kathy experiences as the veil between the animal world and the human world lifts and she catches a glimpse of what it means to honor and witness these profound moments of our lives through animal medicine.
